Update on third-wave in Gauteng

The third-wave in Gauteng is now clearly evident in the patterns of both new infections and new COVID-19 hospital admissions. The 7-day moving average for both infections and admissions has reached a level of between 35% and 40% of the height of the second wave as can be seen in the two graphs below:



The pattern for reported COVID-19 deaths shows that new deaths reported for Gauteng are between 20% and 25% of the level at the peak of the second wave in that province. This is to be expected given the lag between infections/admissions and deaths.


No third-wave pattern is evident yet for any of the other large provinces (KwaZulu Natal, Western Cape or Eastern Cape)
