The third wave has started in Gauteng

An analysis of the reported COVID-19 infections by province shows a continued uptick in new infections in Gauteng. New infections in this province are almost at 20% of the height of the peaks in the two previous waves. While there may be other explanations for this, it is not alarmist to call this the start of a third wave in Gauteng.


There is still no clear sign of a third wave in the patterns of COVID-19 hospital admissions or reported deaths - see the graphs below. This is encouraging and could mean that the uptick in new infections turns out to be a spike rather than the start of a wave.
